I have a book around here I 'acquired' from brother-in-law's 'headed for trash' box, along with some others, and it is called 'Subterranean' by James Rollins. It has the group of explorers going into a cave system below Antartica in a search and rescue for another group of scientist that went missing. They find some kind of ecosystem with strange creatures(i.e. intelligent, self-camo lizards/dinos) and plants(i.e.flourescent lichen). The one thing about the book is the small, hairy, 3ft. tall creatures they find down there who befriends the explorers. The other thing, if I remember right, is these creatures lay claim to have came there by a tunnel system from the islands in the area of Indonesia or possibly Australia.
The book's copyright is 1999.

Looking around I found where this guy used aborignal myths.

Additionally, I also like to peel back ancient myths and search for the hidden truths behind these stories. In SUBTERRANEAN, it was Aboriginal mythology. In EXCAVATION, it was Incan mythology. In DEEP FATHOM, it was Polynesian mythology.
