Just a thought. Cynicism aside, certain elements of H sapiens are "healthier" now than at most points in our history (well fed, educated, housed, treated against disease, etc, etc.). Then we have what you describe as a parasitic element - thriving on the efforts of what you seem to feel are more worthy represenatives of the species - scientists, athletes, etc.
I would argue that this is survival of the fittest in its purest form - those best adapted to survive in an environment reproduce the best. One sector of the population works hard and brings in the bacon, the other sector, with little effort on its own part, feeds off of this effort and reproduces at a greater rate.
