As a (safe) recreational diver I share your concerns, but I also find the idea fascinating! Emagine for example being able to dive at shallow depths (10-20 meters) completely unlimited by air supply, only the other pressure related constraints!
This is the kind of technology that could revolutionize an industry once all the (many and complex) kinks are worked out. I'm sure these are exactly the kinds of issues that faced very early divers experimenting with the first versions of equipment we use today.
Nothing scares me more than "cowboy" and novice divers that ignore or are ignorant of safe practices, and I'm sure you see a much higher ratio of tragedy than I as a rescue diver. It is an inherently dangerous pastime - but beautiful.
