Aurorae need a clear-ish sky (I have seen strong ones through haze) and a minimal of light pollution. They are not that common in the S of England, maybe 6 or so recorded annually. From the S of England, they are most likely to be in the N. Look for a greenish or reddish glow. For aurora predictions go to [www.spaceweather.com] ; predictions are made hours, rather than days, before.
