That is a great question. The evidence around us however is that the Earth changes continue to intensify, so, at this particular time any without any better information/data then what the older generations knew (Mayans, old Myths, etc) about the dynamics of these larger macro cycles, it is very difficult if not impossible to predict any other dates...
Either case, simply ignoring or denying their knowledge would be follish at best...
