I remember driving a car to be delivered to Philly from Miami to New Haven, to drop my stuff off at Yale and then deliver the car to Philly. It was the day after a hurricane, and there were no Interstates then. US 1 was in parts virtually on the beach and bits were still covered with water, palm branches, etc. Great fun! But that hurricane was nothing like Katrina. I also spend the night in the Miami Herald offices during one hurricane -- the office was right on Biscayne Bay and I went outside during the eye and watched various fires burning.
