By law, Native American tribal groups are independent sovereign nations.... although in real life (surrounded by a country & non-Indian populace that outnumbers them something like 200 to 1) this works out to more like quasi-independent.

The Navajo Nation is the people (Dine') & land (Dinetah) of the "Navajo" tribal group.

They own the largest surviving landbase among U.S. tribes (see [www.crystalinks.com] for a GOOD overview map, I have NOT reviewed the other info on this site & DON'T guarantee it's authenticity.... but the map is nice. [www.lapahie.com] has a more detailed map, but no overview for perspective).

The Cherokee are officially a larger tribe.... but the Cherokee rolls are inflated by some VERY thinblooded people with little or no genetic or cultural connection to the tribe. The Navajo have far more people with a large degree of Indian ancestry & culture.
