Actually they were quite heavy vehicles and needed a good V8 with oomph. I have fond memories of the model.
I had an very early 70's version, a modified XA ute (small pickup in USA) with a 351C and a top loader gear box. I lashed two 44 gallon drums to the cabin, one full of petrol and one full of water and that was before max came on the scene. The speedometer gave up the ghost at 100,000 miles and over time I cut all the wires attached to red lights because they annoyed me. I carried two C grade railway sleepers (don't ask) a socket set, a few screwdrivers and a roll of fencing wire to hold the bloody thing together. You need fencing wire when you travel the Australian outback, also a pair of stockings in case the fan-belt should break. It just kept going and going that old XA. I eventually buried it with full honours somewhere N.W. of the rock (Uluru-Kata Tjuta) and that's no lie.
