I agree with your general viewpoint here.

When I see, read or hear about the 'bad' influence some films and tv programmes have on people, I have to ask: What films and TV programmes did Jack the Ripper watch?

As to this latest row about football. Surely the answer is for the TV technicians monitoring the match to simply switch cameras when these incidents of aggression between players occur.
On the other hand, perhaps the powers-that-be like to zoom in on these things as some kind of modern day gladitorial combat.
