Temple town Madurai was the first planned city, with Temple of Meenakshi at the centre, streets were laid out in concentric squares, each square-shaped street carried the name of a month... first one, close to the temple carried the name of the first month.. chiththirai

Chiththirai Veethi (veethi = street). and,
Mela chiththirai veethi (west chiththirai street)
Keelai chiththira veethi (east chiththirai street)
vada chiththirai veethi (north chiththirai street)
then chiththirai veethi (south chiththirai street) to differentiate the four components of the square street....

Madurai is in modified form as it has gone through lot of changes since then.. not all 12 streets are there. but, there are many more (as the town grew bigger and bigger), with different names... Chithirai, Aani, Aavani and Maasi are still there.. (Madurai is the second biggest city in Tamil nadu next only to Chennai (Madras))...
