A leader should take notice of all the advantages, and disadvantages, of potential fields of battle in respect to not only his army, but also the army of his opponent. By doing so the leader would up his odds of winning the battle no matter whether he had the larger army or not!
Something akin to the Spartans and the battle at Thermopylae! Though the Spartans lost, eventually, their wise choice of where to meet the enemy in battle allowed them success in their plan of battle( delaying the larger army allowing their army to be brought together back home) and sorely hendered/hurt the enemy.
