I am a sucker for stories of lost expeditions and incredible stories of survival. These are some of my favorites:

Another expedition that caught my attention 50+ years ago was a book [www.amazon.com] about an explorer that went looking for El Dorado in the upper Amazon. IIRC he did find gold and managed to pack out about 50 lbs. He mentioned a water fall that he expected to contain a huge gold deposit in the pool at the base. Unfortunately he never returned from the second expedition.
