Science fiction writers always have an ear to the ground for rumors of possible new technologies. Whether that applies in this case or it was just a lucky guess would require some research. Someone once told me the main barrier to making metals transparent was all those extra electrons that also make them good electrical conductors.

Actually the material is aluminum oxide which is harder than aluminum. Anyone have any ideas how the fine particles and 1200 degrees C would make a metal oxide transparent?
