I agree, he is pretty flat for a character. I don't think it's necessarily intended though because I found most of Brown's characters to be rather shallow. That could be just so that the pace of the books aren't bogged down in character development though. You read a book by Amy Tam or Alice Hoffman, the characters are very full and rich but the books are slow. It could be just a matter of genre.
