Unfortunately, Da Vinci and Poussin have been co-opted and sensationalized lately, and as a result it is probably impossible at present to have a fruitful discussion regarding the topic of veiled heresy in Renaissance art... for now.
I am not at all interested in the Mason/Knights Templar business, and I am not much interested in those over-done sides of beef, Da Vinci and Poussin. I wish it were possible to discuss heretical thought-- as expressed in art during the Renaissance-- without Da Vinci's and Poussin's supposed acolytes muddying the water.
There are other artists from that period deserving close attention as regards veiled protest against the RC Church and its dictums.

Hi back, t.
I agree that seeking to connect the art to Masonic and Templar secret societies does tend to put a considerable CT spin on the subject, and then we'd all have to wear tinfoil hats I guess... and the discussion would get too murky or contentious to really get anywhere... though it would certainly be enjoyable... for its own sake, as 'twere.
So, setting aside the adumbrations of CT, I would be interested in knowing what other artists might have engaged in veiled protest against the RC Church and its dictums. Who did you have in mind, and what pictures?
Regards,
Sue
