Occasionally, people post images here by using the bbcode image tags. If the image is under copyright, is that act a violation of copyright?

I've asked a friend of mine who is in law school to bring it up in their upcoming seminar on internet law, but I thought it would be good to ask the question here to see where your thoughts lie.
