Well, that was Kidson's observation ... although in a mediaeval, rather than a prehistoric, context.

Having spent Saturday afternoon trying to measure my mother's back garden, which consists of field grass and a lot of uneven ground, with two steel tapes, I now realize just a few of the physical difficulties involved in carrying out accurate surveys in the field. (Even the steel tapes wouldn't stay straight).
