There are forums out there specifically designed to work people.... even computer illiterates.... through fixes.
One is [

There are also a number of free download programs that hunt out & eliminate many of the problems. Run google searches for "Lavasoft AdAware", "SpyBot Search & Destroy", "CWShredder", "Microsoft Antispyware" (Beta?), & download them.
Another useful little trick I've found is to run a search for files created at the same time as you picked up the malware, AND at the time that you accidentally gave it an O.K.
You'll likely find a little cluster of files, all created at the same times, usually with at least one being an exe file, one being an application, one being an application extension, etc.
If you don't recognize them, & checking their properties doesn't show a link to something legitimate, get rid of them. (If created at the same minute as the bad files, axe them no matter what).
Some computers back up everything in protected files, in which case you might need to do stuff there as well.
There are also some commercial programs (trojan hunter, etc), that do good work if you can afford it. But none of them get everything (dammed blackhat hackers outnumber the whitehats & the legitimate defense companies), so try the free stuff before you risk wasting your money.
Hope this helps.
