You're not confused - farther and further were used interchangably through most of their usage.

Apparently the divergence comes in the adjectival form where "farther" is generally used to indicate physical distance and "further" is used to denote addition,

e.g. "move farther afield" or "
or "a further thing" or "further to my previous comments".

COnfusingly farthest and furthest still seem to be interchangable!
