I built a theory once, back when I was researching religions for satirical purposes...

It went along the lines of claiming that this life is actually hell. Hell on earth, to be precise. Therefore, 'end of world' scenarios were merely there to raise hopes to be later dashed and/or life was just an illusion of toil, work & torture... only to end in a repeat.

Self-defeating theory in that the greatest of despair would be realized by having 'memories' that all this work and torturous life was done before... although it could be argued that 'history' provides those 'memories' lol
