Hi Roxanna perhaps I can help.

You wrote: I'm still trying to figure out why the Mayans have so much more credibility than say the Book of Revelations. .

The reason that "some" believe in a possible shift in things as we know it is partly based on what happened at the end of the last Mayan cycle which was:

When did the Long Count Start?

Logically, the first date in the Long Count should be 0.0.0.0.0, but as the baktun (the first component) are numbered from 1 to 13 rather than 0 to 12, this first date is actually written 13.0.0.0.0.

The authorities disagree on what 13.0.0.0.0 corresponds to in our calendar. I have come across three possible equivalences:

13.0.0.0.0 = 8 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 13 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)
13.0.0.0.0 = 6 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 11 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)
13.0.0.0.0 = 11 Nov 3374 BC (Julian) = 15 Oct 3374 BC (Gregorian)

Assuming one of the first two equivalences, the Long Count will again reach 13.0.0.0.0 on 21 or 23 December AD 2012 - a not too distant future.

The date 13.0.0.0.0 may have been the Mayas’ idea of the date of the creation of the world.

If one seaches that date or around that date (3114 BC) one finds this:

c. 3150 BC: According to the legend, Narmer (First Dynasty) started to rule in Ancient Egypt.
c. 3125 BC: Narmer died.
29 June 3123 BC: A probably legendary asteroid approach on collision course is reputedly documented by a Sumerian astronomer (alleged collision happened near modern Koefels, Austria; see Sturzstrom)[1]
Varna Necropolis: what have been claimed to be the earliest-known worked gold artifacts are manufactured.
Malta: Construction of the Ħaġar Qim megalithic temples, featuring both solar and lunar alignments. "Tarxien period" of megalithic temple construction reaches its apex.
Ancient Egypt: Earliest known Egyptian hieroglyphs, beginning of the Early Dynastic Period of Egypt.
Crete: Rise of Minoan civilization.
Neolithic settlement built at Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. (pictured)
New Stone Age people in Ireland build the 250,000 ton (226,796.2 tonne) Newgrange solar oriented passage tomb.

Since it is obvious that earth changing events occurred at the end of the last cycle is it that strange to expect the same this time around ?

The major consensus now is that it will in all likelihood (or at least most are hoping for) a spiritual awakening or enlightenment and are hoping the fire with which it is supposed to end will be the fires of an illumination of the mind.

The analysis of Revelation and the prophecies of Daniel would seem to be outside the parameters of his thread.

And of note the destruction of St Peter's Basilica and it rolling around like a bowling ball is most probably symbolic for the destruction of the old religions and a cleansing of the the outdated deities of mankind. The old god has[have] outlived it's usefulness (if it ever really had a practical use) But that is for another board and another day.

Regards
Don Barone
