Because (the idea of) ancient Mayans are 'foreign' and 'romantic', and trendy, and New-Agey, in a way that the old, humdrum, familiar since forever Book of Revelations.
Actual factual ancient Mayans, maybe not so much, at least to 9 out of 10 randomly-met strangers on the street. (The academic community doesn't count. Neither do amateurs who actually read the publications by the academic community.)
