Why would people be willing to sacrifice their own lives in such a manner? Why was news of this obsene act greeted with jubilation by ordinary people in parts of the world? Why, behind the official statements of shocked disbelief from many countries around the world, should there be stark messages of the need for the US to look at itself?

This is truly a world event (the news is that there are hundreds of UK citizens among the casualties and doubtless this is true of many other nations as well) and it is the world itself that must respond. Not only to bring justice to the guilty, but to ensure that the very roots of what led to the events of September 11th are also tackled.
