It would have involved "walking" the stones along (part of the route of) the A40.
It might have been possible: but it would have taken an awfully long time.
WW can move 1 block 300 ft. an hour (1:50).
So, if it would take 18 hours to move a block one mile, and if it's 112 miles from Abergavenny to Amesbury, it would take 84 days moving non-stop, or about 250 days allowing for rest-periods. So under a year ...
Well: it looks as if, using that method, they could have theoretically managed it! But I don't know what they'd have done about hills and so forth ...
