Had it not been for the lard buckets (hanging on the covered wagons to grease axles in the 1840s and later) the settlement of the American West would have been slower. The development would have happened eventually anyway, but by the time WW 2 came along that previous extra gain in time bought industrial strength helpful in winning wars.
