In 587 BC, the Babylonians destroyed Solomon's Temple. But there was silence about the fate of the Ark.
In 538 BC, the exiled Jewish people were allowed to return to Judah. All their venerated ritual items were returned: apart from the Ark.
The Ark, however, was apparently made of acacia wood. Acacia wood is described as very durable, possibly lasting for decades - [

Decades: not
centuries.
I speculate that, over time, the object simply disintegrated, which possibly resulted in a lot of headaches for the harassed priests. Possibly hiding what was left of it from public view, and maintaining a diplomatic silence, might have been their way of dealing with the problem ... long before 587 or 538 BC.
