<HTML>A complete mammoth was excavated near here(North Sulphur River,Fannin County Texas)around 1987 sans skull. It now resides in the Dallas Museum of Natural History. We have teeth of mammoths in the Fannin County Historical Museum and until they were stolen last year,Folsom and Clovis points from the same area.Mammoth remains are not uncommon in the river valleys of North Texas nor are the lithics of those who presumably pursued them. What is truly unusual is the complete skeleton of a mammoth embedded in triassic red sandstone near Colorado City,Texas. This was shown in situ last June on a local CBS affiliate.Since then I've heard nothing more about it.The archives of the Dallas Morning News may have the story but given the embarassing strata in which it was found I'm not surprised at the deafening silence.Fehrenbach mentions remains of mammoths still being present on the plains when the Comanche descended from the Rockies and others have made mention of mammoth survival as late as 5,000 BCE but I've seen no solid substantiation for such a late date except for the case of the pymies KatDawg mentioned.</HTML>
