I don't think that news departments will ever get historical or archaeological related news correct. There's so much drive in the news to be splashy. Lost civilizations (that weren't really lost) sound better than any of the more correct possibilities.
Going back to the infamous billiard ball incident even when they're corrected news reporters and agencies would rather see splashy print. It's one of the big reasons why you shouldn't get your history information from the news.
