I don't think anyone is dismissing something like the alignments of the Serpent Mound (at least I don't think so). But we get numerous claims of alignment that can be simply accidental. I recall an archaeologist a few years back who wrote that he had built a model Kiva in his backyard and after it was finished he noticed that he had accidentally built it so that it had an "alignment" with certain stars.
(Does the mound align just north maybe? That's pretty common)
