"civilization" was "spiritual". I do not know if it has be discredetd but I was much impressed years ago with the book by Julian Jaymes, The Origin of Consciousness and The Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. By this account the most aniceint peoples did speak with the gods, communicate with the animals and feasted on the the plants of life. And the only evidence they left behind are things like cave paintings. Hancock goes astray when he attributesless spiritual things to them like map making and sphinx building.
