Good post. As an undergraduate I took "Biblical Studies" as part of my BA degree at Trinity College, Dublin. We dealt with the Ebla materials. When they turned up, all sorts of "biblical" parallels (ones that "proved" the Bible) were claimed -- names, places, you name it. On closer inspection, however, the names were mostly bogus, sort of like saying Ebla "John" is Biblical "Joseph" and the places equally so. So I wonder if Sodom and Gomorrah are <i>actually</i> referred to in the Ebla tablets or if some gentle massaging of the words is required to get the fit ....
However, this 20-year old information. Things may have changed since then.
