I used to think along these lines, too, Jammer. However, I have a feeling (but would be happy to be corrected) that it might depend on which latitude you were situated; and I also have a feeling that, ideally, residential buildings should anyway be slightly skewed as regards the cardinal directions.
Maybe someone might have more information on this ...
