This is some more background on the Late Bronze Age site of Enkomi. As we know, there are numerous other ancient sites with evidence of orthogonal planning (e.g., Harappa), and others where an orthogonal street-grid was aligned cardinally (e.g., Polyanitsa, in north-east Bulgaria, c. 4500 BC).

The Roman names for the principal roads were the kardo (or cardo) maximus and decumanus maximus.
