Hello all,
A postscript re the hole in the west ramp at the north end of the Gallery.
I have in front of me an original first edition of Piazzi Smyth's 3 Volume
Life and Works at the Great Pyramid 1867.
In Vol. 1 opp. page 167, appears three drawings (PL.6) of the north end of the Grand Gallery.
In the plan of the area the first slot - on both sides - is clearly shown as abutting the north wall.
There is no doubt that the drawing by Smyth that RLH posted is showing the area as it actually was in the 1860s, consequently the slot does not show in the drawing.
As Chris T has pointed out, Petrie's drawing shows the area between the opening to the Well Shaft and the Gallery's north wall
without the extensive damage to the ramp at this point.
So, I unreservedly agree that both pictures are correct.
Regards,
MJ
