I would denounce Plato's Atlantis as a myth, but the fact that it is imperfect is in my mind proof that he got it from someone else -if he had made it up himself, it would be perfect. It is not.

Solon's exploits are very well known, and no one has ever denounced him as a myth. That is ridiculous.

My theory is one of the few ones which takes into account Athens. If you had read my post, you would see that Plato actually says that Atlantis was founded before 1529 BC, and that it sank 1347-1234 BC, and that he only added on the 9000 as the date the Egyptians gave. But actually taking the 9000 date seriously is like trying to take the Egyptians seriously when they say their own civilization dates back to 36000 BC.

As for their no being any record of Atlantis in Egyptian mythology, that is because it was not important. Atlantis was simply the oldest record they had of the Greeks -not very old, and not important to the highly nationalistic Egyptians.

As for other writers, they mention a kingdom. Diodorus talks about a kingdom callled Atlantis in Morocco, that had a King Atlas who was a wise astronomer and navigator. Pliny says that Morocco was the subject of wondruous fables by the Greeks, who he claimed place it in the middle of the Atlantic, and said that it was huge, and said that it had an empire greater than that of Carthage -clearly a reference to Atlantis. Herodotus mentions Atalantes in Morocco.

As for Plato's philosophical fiction, while he surely embellished the story, it is unlikely he would have implicated his relatives, Critias and Solon, in a lie when he wanted to glorify them. And how do you explain that he simply chose the name of a kingdom that was part of a wider tradition, that all places it in Morocco? And that he clearly describes Morocco? There is no way the whole thing could be made up, and still perfectly match with a geogrphic description of a region in the world.
