An 'educated' guess.

I have some experience of boat design, woodworking and building, ancient shipping etc, water cargo trade etc.

You asked what you had missed, and, on consideration, I pointed out an aspect that you had missed completely.

I can't see a boat that huge being punted or rowed - especially on narrow waterways - oars would be terrible and there was no evidence of rollocks. As for horses - possible, but they need a clear track relatively straight. A team of men is much more flexible/mobile.
