<HTML>Hi Claire,

Cann was certainly one of the pioneers for the genetically based Out of Africa theory. She caught some serious flack when Eve showed up on the cover of Time! But over the years (her original paper appeared in Nature in 1987) her overall findings have been replicated by a number of other biochemists using not just mitochondrial DNA but very recently nuclear DNA drawn from the Y chromosome (the one you get from your father). The Out of Africa hypothesis is quickly approaching the "proven beyond a reasonable doubt" stage. Folks like Wolpoff and Brace should gracefully discard their Neanderthal "roots." Multiregionalism has joined the ranks of geocentrism and Lamarckian evolution - but it put up a good fight!</HTML>
