<HTML>Most elements of the block and tackle that are distinguishable in the photo are obviously forged steel, not cast iron. Cast iron has great tensile and compressive strength (witness its use in boilers) but forged steel is far superior. The main problem with cast iron is that it is brittle. It looks like one of the pulleys may have a broken flute, an indication that it may be cast iron.
An interesting observation, and not relevant to the arguments either way, is the cushioned sling which is attached to the weight bearing elements. This must have been used to prevent damage to the work.
