QuoteEleni Vassilikos, director of the Egyptian Museum of Turin, explained the importance of the discovery: "They may have to revise the dates of the dynasties of pharaohs and add names." The current reconstruction is incorrect and needs to be revised. That really will upset the apple cart. I'm surprised this hasn't caused more excitement and discussion here as it looks likby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
I would not want to be the person who sold a Viking a phony Sword if he managed to make it back alive.by Joe_S - Ancient History
I refer you to the earliest known depictions of constellations found on the Asyut coffin lids, crca 2100 BC (IXth and Xth Dynasties) In earlier times, the AEs simply depicted the heavens as an unidentifiable mass of stars, if they depicted them at all: Burial Chamber in the Pyramid of Unas, Vth Dynasty They may well have had more precise sightings of certain stars for fixing true Noby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
QuoteThose pyramids that do not have a chamber at ground level, but higher up in the structure (Red, Bent, etc) have entrance passages that lead into them from points higher still. This would allow the flooding to occur via the passage, if necessary. The passage was very large, compared to the tiny shafts in Khufu's pyramid, so they may have seen them as sufficiently large to act as single cby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
I agree that the theory should fit the facts and not the other way round. However, I think you're lumping a lot of things together there: the geometric theories are for the most part groundless, but the idea that the shafts were intended to join the Pharaoh with the Heavens seems just as important to your theory as it does to the stellar-alignment folks. I don't think the AEs were aiminby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
Which Geometric Solution, Don? There are literally thousands. Joe.by Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
I don't see that the quote you give there conflicts with Anthony's theory. There's general consensus on the AEs viewing the sky as a cosmic sea (why else would they go to all the trouble to build and then bury those magnificent boats, if not to allow the Pharoah to navigate the cosmic waters of the Abyss in the afterlife?). Anthony posits that the shafts were intended to provide enby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
Congrats Anthony, it's been a long time coming. At $45.00 it's a bit steep just to read one paper, but maybe some kind relative will feel generous this Holiday Season ? I shall read the rest of this thread at my leisure. Joe.by Joe_S - Ancient Egypt

Or... the forger lived around 300 AD (see my post below). Joe.by Joe_S - Ancient History
It's not even clear that David and Solomon weren't, in fact, Canaanite kings, just as proto-Israelites were themselves Canaanites for the most part. The suggestion made that this must be a Biblical Jewish town because the gate faces East is laughable.by Joe_S - Ancient History
Please do, it's a very interesting case. It amazes me how often folks assume that all archaeological hoaxes or forgeries have to be modern. Joe.by Joe_S - Ancient History
The AEs modelled their pyramids after the Primordial Mound. It's not that different and you can find cultures ancient and less so all over the globe that gave or give special meaning to hills and mountains. The reason? By climbing a mountain, one can approach the heavens. There doesn't need to be any shared heritage between the Ancient Egyptians, Maya, Caral, Chinese, Native Americans eby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt

I was replying to your own words: QuoteYou should take note that 4 millenium ago, people were building pyramids on many places on the Earth. You then proceed to list examples that are much later than 2000 BC: >>Pyramids in Xian, China They are not Pyramids, they are earthen burial mounds. Also your dates are way off, they date from around 300 - 190 BC, built before and during theby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
The 200 AD date was from an analysis of the Aramaic dialect by Paul Flesher, Director of the Religious Studies Program, University of Wyoming (he suggests 200 AD-600 AD as the likely date range): Does the James' Ossuary really refer to Jesus Christ? What I find disturbing about this case is that opinions seem to differ according to the religious agenda (or anti-religious agenda) of theby Joe_S - Ancient History
I don't think it's much of a problem for most Scholars to accept the historicity of Jesus even though it's unlikely that tangible physical evidence will ever be found.by Joe_S - Ancient History
I think they will have to go there now to find out. You never know: there may just be bubbling tar pits deep below the surface. This would be a very exciting find indeed as it would prove that Mars once sustained plant and possibly other organic life and sustains bacterial life in the tar itself. Of course, this is all hopeful conjecture until they can go there to get a sniff of the whiff and detby Joe_S - Laboratory
QuoteYou should take note that 4 millenium ago, people were building pyramids on many places on the Earth. Er, no they weren't. Other than Mesopotamia and Egypt I know of no other places that were building pyramid-like structures that early.by Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
QuoteThe ceremonial adze was made from the metal of heaven, bi3 n pt, meteoric iron. From here: Is that really true? If so, it does show a clear link in the AE's minds between the Opening of the mouth Ceremony and the Pharaoh's place in the Heavens. They clearly gave meteorites very reverent treatment as objects fallen from heaven and so the adze used in this ceremony would likelby Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
I expect another anti-climax along the lines of Al Capone's safe. I wonder how Nat Geo can think they are getting good value for their money from Hawass?by Joe_S - Ancient Egypt
I mostly agree, but there is a big difference with the Arthur tales: the first ones were not written down until around 400 years after the historical Arthur probably lived. The first gospel stories were written only 60-80 years after Jesus lived, so they are more likely to contain real people and real events.by Joe_S - Ancient History
I'm fascinated by this site, but it's a bit much to start claiming it as the Birth place of civilization or even agriculture. One would have to ignore the Natufian culture in the Levant which is the earliest evidence of building settlements and organized cultivation of wild plants.by Joe_S - Ancient History
I think this is all part of the effort to make Nuclear power appear clean, friendly and safe and a better alternative to fossil fuels, sponsored by.... people who build Nuclear Power Stations.by Joe_S - Laboratory
I did find that piece, but was unable to corroborate it from a less partisan source. Do you have a straight-up report of the proceedings I could look at? Linguistic analysis of the text of the inscription put the date at around 200 AD, which is much too late, but still ancient. I think that's the biggest hurdle to overcome here: even if the Ossury and inscription are both genuine, how doby Joe_S - Ancient History
Or, to put it another way: personality cults usually require a real personality. Other than Jesus we have: Buddha, Mohamed, Zoroaster, the Maharishi, L. Ron Hubbard (oK, that last one's a joke).by Joe_S - Ancient History
Wasn't "The Lord" a later appellation? I'm thinking it would be unlikely to be on an ossuary from the tie of Jesus.by Joe_S - Ancient History
Personally, I don't doubt that Jesus, James, John the Baptist and the named disciples existed, I also think King Arthur was a real person, but does that mean all of the tales written about King Arthur are true? Of course not! Joe.by Joe_S - Ancient History
QuoteIn concluding both inscriptions were forged, a team of experts from the Antiquities Authority said in 2003 that the inscription on the ossuary cut through the ancient limestone box's patina, a thin coating acquired with age, proving the writing was not ancient. The officials also found that the writing on the black sandstone tablet was carried out by someone thinking in modern Hebrewby Joe_S - Ancient History
