yes because wirelessguru1 has conclusively proven that CO2 is not a green house gas and man has not spewed out any above the natural level of CO.

Well whatever was left, what would be the lifespan of papyrus/vellum/(paper?) in Alexandria.
Alexandria was founded in the Nile delta? Is it humid? If there were still tens of thousands of documents/books, would a city in decline and increasingly anti-science, bother or have the resurces to maintain the collection?
In regards to your tangentential comment about the genocide in the Americas b

that sounds like "hearsay" to me. Weren't there many of thousands of scrolls/books (>100,000)?
The sad truth may well be that over the centuries they decayed/got eaten and the job of maintaining/copying them was no longer economically or politically possible (ie the culture no longer supported it), and near the end what was left was burnt/looted etc.
No doubt, texts on maths a

my god, you are so insightful, thankyou very much for taking the time to post that.
It's a good thing it's a totally non-man caused event, and just one of those whacky meta-cycles.

never be done that cheap. even in those numbers.
the components like the screen and hard drive alone cost too much, and they are already mass produced. Think of the problems with s/w and h/w that will occur, plus the electricity, and internet connectivity (what use is a computer witohut that, especially if they intend to replace textbooks). Best value for poor rural places is to fund a full time

you ignored a more interesting one:
"Killed by a fall from the belfrey at Alhallowes the Great: 1"
perhaps Umberto Eco used that in Name of the Rose.

You only have to observe a spider at their work to realise that a lot of complex behaviours are able to be hard wired, in even the simplest life forms. Hence, I am never surprised (didn't read the article).

I have no knowledge to answer your topic.
All I have to say is, whenever I see someone using one of those ancient style looms, I think "wow, how did someone invent that".
The conceptual leap to create that seems huge, whereas the invention of the wheel seems quite obvious (though not insignificant).

o I'm sure he based it partly off some city that got lost to the sea.
There are quite a few lost/sunken cities from very ancient times.
Seems to be a common theme of man, that we look back to an age that was considered "golden", therein lies the hyperbole.

One would think that their immune system was far more robust than ours....and also the cold virus (variants included) would be pretty ancient, and also it's not like they died out overnight, so resistance would have developed.

It is probable that there was a Jewish preacher called Jesus. It is probable he was seen as a troublemaker by the Jewish leaders. It is probable he was crucified by the Romans in what was a period of growing unrest. It is probable a wealthy supporter paid for the return of the body for a

Eternal Sunshine is an absolutely brilliant movie. Best movie I have seen in years. By far.
Lost in translation is good, even repeat worthy, but has nothing like the genius and impact of ESOTSM.

I'm pretty sure I saw Quest for fire on free to air tv years ago.
My favourite historical film: Excalibur.
It is based on the middle ages (romantic) view of the saga rather than the recent King aurthur end of Roman era, but really nails the mystical and knightly aspects.

He should chew on this:
"A Times Online article discusses a new study comparing 7 million real world datapoints with several computer models of global warming. Each model had a possible cause associated with it." From the article: "It found that natural variation in the Earth’s climate, or changes in solar activity or volcanic eruptions, which have been

don't miss Umberto Ecos "Focoult's Pendulum", I haven't read Da Vinci Code (and probably never will), but as far as I can tell, that would be far superior to Dan Brown's dumbing down. If you still wish to read The Da Vinci Code, read Focoult's Pendulum first, because it is a great primer

yes, but would it be fair to say, in general, scholars have always been associated with the knowledge and control of religion, have they not?
Obvious exceptions are the Greeks, Chinese, and perhaps for a short period the Arabs.?
(even the scholars of the middle ages in Europe were the monks).
Also, maybe our translation of their word into scholars is too broad.

I saw a documentary that showed a 1950's Russian experiment to domesticate Artic Foxes (I think it was, but they had dark fur, unless that is just seasonal) for the fur trade.
Anyway, after a decade of selective breeding chosen purely by how friendly each fox was, they were able to breed foxes that were placid, friendly and playful just like dogs. Funny thing was, these lines developed gree

how can an online publication in this day and age justify not having a photo for a story like this?
if NASA didn't release one with their story, how can that be justified?

So frustrating, because the headline probably should read "rock" not "object".
