Nope. Didn't forget that. It's because of human proportions. Easy for illiterate workmen and craftsmen to deal with.

They didn't invent a base 7 system just for the GP alone and then totally forget it after. If they'd had it, they would have been working it all along.

I'm not sure you understand base 7.
