I am of the opinion that we are taught to memorise the times tables because as a society we either

a) underestimate the ability of our children to think.

or

b) effectively undermine the ability of our children to think.

when one considers the intellectual level that is targeted by Television Commercials one is forced to realise that (b) is the correct answer.

Only we have gone one step further...we now allow students to carry pocket calculators into maths exams. sad smiley
