I think that it's because this is the image that comes to mind when people think of Egypt.

The paradigm was old even before the discovery of Tut's tomb by Carter, so it's become kind of a cultural meme. People glomp onto it as though it's the only thing in the entire country and everything else is trivial.

If the temple of Ramses had been the greatly celebrated wonder of the world (the Giza complex is one of the "wonders of the ancient world"), then you'd find the same kind of nonsense bandied about in regards to Ramses and the temple.
