It looks original and at least during the Middle Kingdom I've seen sphinxes with various things carried on their backs. Sadly, it *could* be something that was so obscure that it is significant to only people of a certain location and a certain time period... like... oh, I dunno... say "red pegasus in Dallas." The red pegasus was the symbol of an oil company (Mobil) that had its headquarters here in Dallas. Over time, this symbol was discontinued and one of the few artifacts left is the pegasus here in Dallas. It'd be a puzzling find for archaeologists 3,000 years later.
