I would think of two reasons, basic insanity brought on by stress or a medical condition or like so many academics I've seen influenced by a nationalistic agenda - that trumps their knowledge of the scientific method. We saw this in the 19th century with German, French and British scientists falling over themselves to support their own countries, as best or first in most things - in the 20th century it was the Russians who went hog wild with this too. Now its everywhere a lot of such fun folks in the Balkan countries.
