I suppose the mastaba could have been at any time if the pyramid and temple site was abandoned as a royal tomb, but the earliest date would be just one generation before Khufu. Sneferu was, of course, the greatest pyramid builder by volume of stone.
My case is that all the dimensions of Khufu's sarcophagus, which I listed as D1 to D15, conform to an elegant geometric model, most precisely so, and overlooked by all who have tried to improve on Smyth's analysis as far as I know. If it was last granite sarcophagus ever made, rather than one of the first, then my conclusions would be the same.
I accept that Its appearance is rather disappointing compared to the grandeur and exquisite finish of the King's Chamber, but what other sarcophagus conforms to an elegant geometric model. All eight principal dimensions conform to either Smyth's determination or Petrie's determination within a millimetre, plus the external and internal diagonals.
The external diagonal has a theoretical length of 2488.4 millimetres. Smyth determined as 2488.9 millimetres assuming a perfect rectangle. This is a build standard of close to 1 part in 5000.
So many have relied on Petrie telling them the build standard was very low.
To prove this for yourself just double the volume of a theoretical sphere with a diameter of 70 digits for the pi approximation 22/7 and convert to a box with a height of 2 cubits and an area 5/3 times the area of a rectangle with a diagonal of 4 cubits and an area of 3850 square digits as that of a circle with a diameter of 70 digits and make all the sides equal in thickness. Evaluate for a cubit of 524 millimetres (20.63 inches) and a digit of 131/7 millimetres.
But all that is obvious.
The diameter of the holes is 0.84 inches as Smyth.
The theoretical diameter of 9/8 digits equates to 0.83 inches.
The cylindrical holes have a depth of 1.2 inches as Smyth, so not measured as precisely.
A theoretical depth for 1.66 digits is just under 1.23 inches so within 0.03 inches of the model.
The volume of a cylinder equal to all three cylinders would encompass a sphere with a volume equal to two of the cylinders for the special case of a virtual sphere with a diameter equal to the height and diameter of a virtual cylinder, but what is left is only part of three cylinders.
Can you work out the depth of the corresponding holes in the lid if the locking mechanism was a model of a sphere in a cylinder which actually disappears on closure of the lid, and then explain why? That's the problem I set out to solve.
Interestingly, the tombstone of Archimedes was a model of the volume of a sphere as 2/3 times the volume of a cylinder for the special case.
Professor Miroslav Verner has remarked that Archimedes may have learned geometry during his stay in Egypt.
