There is not much chance that Pharoah Necho II's Phoenician sailors made it round Africa and back through the Straits of Hercules; however, I happen to live in the valley of the Zwartkops River, the mouth of which enters Algoa Bay, a shelter from the fairly hectic weather we experience.
According to Heredotus, they went ashore to grow crops during the winter. Algoa Bay at that time provided fresh water springs, plenty of salt, game a-plenty and reasonable soil for crops.
Sad to say, no evidence has come to light of anyone arriving from the outside world before Diaz. Unless of course you count Captain Menzies famous Chinese fleet of 1421 fame!
