Hawass has implied that he believes a middle kingdom work which appears to be fictional (it's certainly magical) and suggests another chamber in the pyramid is founded in reality.

This may be almost as much promotion as conviction but appears to be the root of the statement.

He's made other enigmatic statements. After coming up out of the Osiris Shgaft in 1996 he said there were clues to how the pyramids were built under here.
