The Egyptians, except for the Amarna spasm (probably only local to the Royal Court anyway) appear to have allowed a huge selection of deities.

They recognized local (city), regional (Nomes), and National Deities, as well as Supream Gods.

With 43 Nomes, each having their own set, and allowing immigrants and captives to keep their own gods as well, their panoply could be huge at times.

I think you've hit it dead on Chris, most likely a retread...

If you were a soldier assigned far from home, prayed to a local Goddess to come home safely, and did, wouldn't you likely keep her in your prayers as well?
