I was wondering because I have also seen them elsewhere in possibly a militaristic type gesture, like giving victory (strength or courage) to a king in battle. It seemed interesting to me because most often you see deities in anthropomorphic or humanoid form, so I thought it had some special connotation (mostly military).

Another thing about this image is the idea of balance with heru on one side and set on the other side and the two images of the pharaoh under the canopies seem to reflect some sort of concept of balance between chaos and order maybe?

Egyptian pictures speak a thousand words....
